Public Services

When you move to a new city there's a whole host of things you need to worry about: buying a new house, getting it hooked up to the electricity, checking what the sewage disposal procedures are, making sure you have adequate police and ambulance services, etc. etc. If you had to handle it all yourself, you'd go mad. Luckily the city of Birmingham offers a broad range of public services and community organizations and displays them all conveniently on its website, making the city an excellent place to buy real estate. For an overview of the City of Birmingham's public services, read on.

Fostering Business and Jobs

One of the primary jobs of any city government is to encourage the economic development of the city. In Birmingham, the city government has gone to great effort to make it easy for companies run by people like you to bid on government contracts for scientific research and experimental development and public construction projects. They also have links right on their website so you can apply for public service jobs. If you're moving to Birmingham to open a business, you can apply for re-zoning or business licenses as well.

Public Libraries and Recreation

They key to the future well-being of a city is the education and health of its citizens. In Birmingham, the city maintains a system of well-stocked public libraries to compliment its school system. There you can conduct an Ottawa job search on an internet equipped computer or find a quiet corner to read up on the eating habits of saltwater crocodiles. Melvin Miller and his five member board also maintain over 2,000 acres of park for citizens to enjoy which include trails, gardens, and golf courses. Through Birmingham public recreation classes, you can learn anything from tennis to crocheting at your neighborhood rec center.

Access to City Council

It is one thing to set up programs and offer them to the public and quite another to take their concerns into account when you're doing it. Birmingham, AL's city council posts their meeting times online and invites feedback from citizens. If you'd like to complain about loud vacuum trucks on the road near your house or request a curb and gutter in your neighborhood, you can do so. The city council also posts tax forms, certain committee meeting minutes, and important public announcements on their website to help keep citizens informed.

Emergency Services

For the protection of Birmingham's citizens, the city council has joined the rest of North America in introducing the 9-1-1 system, which allows residents in trouble to have instant access to all branches of emergency services such as fire, police, ambulance and poison control. Though privatization is still the word on home health care, Belleville, Ontario model health care may be on the way in the coming years. The Birmingham Police Department, or BPD, also offers citizens the chance to anonymously report crimes or give information via their website. The Birmingham Fire Rescue service operates not just emergency vehicles but also a public education service to help people learn to prevent fires.
